New Year’s Resolution Ideas for Children and Teens

While you may have given thought to your New Year’s resolutions, have you thought about having your kids make resolutions, too? Here are some New Year’s resolution ideas for your children to help them establish healthy habits.

Preschoolers

  • I will try my best to clean up after I’m done playing with my toys. I will also help my parents with small chores, such as clearing the table after eating.
  • I will be nice to other kids and will use manners.
  • I will wash my hands before eating and after going to the bathroom.
  • With my parents help, I will brush my teeth twice a day.
  • If I am ever scared or need help, I will talk to my parents.
  • I will ask pet owners if I can pet their animal, and will pet gently.

5 to 12 year-olds

  • I will drink less fruit drinks and soda and will have more water and reduced-fat milk.
  • I will always wear a helmet when riding a bike, skateboard or scooter, and will wear proper protective equipment when playing sports or games.
  • I will try new activities and sports.
  • I will not bully or exclude others. I will be friendly to all of my peers and will respect adults. I will tell an adult if I see bullying.
  • I will not share my personal information, such as my name, home address, phone number or school name on the Internet or with any strangers.
  • I will talk to my parents if I am stressed, when I have a problem or when I need advice.

Teens

  • I will not give in to peer pressure to try drugs, alcohol or any form of cigarettes.
  • I will treat others with respect and will not partake in bullying. If I witness bullying, I will tell a trusted adult so he or she can intervene.
  • When driving, I will always wear a seat belt and have full attention on the road. I will never text while driving.
  • I will take care of my body by eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising for at least 60 minutes most days of the week and getting enough sleep.
  • When dating, I will not settle for anything less than I deserve and I will treat my partner with respect. I will not pressure my partner to have sex, and I will not let him or her pressure me, either.
  • I will reach out to a trusted adult if I need help with a difficult decision or advice on how to handle a tough situation.
  • I will not use a tanning bed and I’ll always apply sunscreen when out in the sun.
  • I will use good judgment while using social media and while texting. I will not post or send any comments, pictures or videos that would put my reputation at risk or make me look bad.
  • When I go to the doctor, I will speak up if I have any questions or concerns about my health.
