Patient Alert: National Albuterol Shortage

March 29, 2023

The U.S. is current experiencing a national albuterol sulfate inhalation solution shortage. This liquid medicine is commonly used for nebulizer treatments to help relax a patient’s airway muscles to aid with symptoms such as cough, wheeze, shortness of breath, or tightness.

Due to the national shortage, UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics and UPMC Children’s Express Care are asking families to bring their inhaler and spacer, if available, to all future sick appointments, especially when seeking care for a respiratory issue.

It’s important to note that individual metered dose albuterol inhalers do not seem to be impacted by the shortage at this time. Should you have any questions or concerns about your child’s asthma or their prescribed medications, please contact your pediatrician.
