No. SMART Choices is not a replacement for substance use treatment or therapy. If an adolescent needs substance use treatment or therapy, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration offers a treatment locator.
Families do not need health insurance to participate in SMART Choices. SMART Choices is free for adolescents and their parents or caregivers who live in western Pennsylvania and have substance use concerns.
To speak with someone from SMART Choices, call 1-844-972-8477, Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outside of business hours, families can leave a message and will receive a call back the next business day.

By visiting UPMC Children’s Express Care, our after-hours clinic, your child will receive the same specialized pediatric care you’ve come to expect from your UPMC Children's Community Pediatrics pediatrician. Open conveniently on evenings and weekends, your child can receive care for minor injuries and illnesses when your pediatrician’s office is closed for the day.
