UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics has partnered with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program to offer BASELINE ImPACT® testing in select locations. ImPACT® (Immediate Post-Concussion Assesment and Cognitive Testing) is a computerized exam used across the country to successfully diagnose and manage concussions.
ImPACT® testing establishes a baseline of normal cognitive function for each child. The BASELINE test will then be used as part of a comprehensive clinical evaluation to determine recovery following a concussion.
ImPACT® testing is recommended for all patients 10 years or older that participate in contact sports. Talk to your pediatrician about this service today. We can’t prevent concussions, but we can be prepared to offer the best recovery plan.
This non-invasive test is set up in a “video game” type format and takes about 30-minutes to complete. The test tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration. It is not an IQ test and poses no risk to patients.
The result of the BASELINE test is used as a benchmark (comparison) tool to determine if your child can safely return to play following a subsequently incurred concussion.
CCP is recommending all patients participating in contact sports 10-years-old and older receive this BASELINE test. Patients should not receive the test if they have had a concussion within the past 30 days.
We recommend children between the ages of 10 and 12-years-old take the test annually. Children over the age of 13-years-old should complete the test every two years.
Patients should not engage in strenuous exercise or activity (e.g. gym class) 3-hours prior to the test.
At this time, CCP is only offering the BASELINE test. If you believe your child has suffered a head injury, please contact your pediatrician. Results of your child’s baseline test will be available to our colleagues at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program if a referral is needed.
At this time, the ImPACT® test is not covered by insurance. There is a $25 charge due at the time of service.

Open conveniently on evenings and weekends, your child can receive care for minor injuries and illnesses when your pediatrician’s office is closed for the day.
