Preparing to Send Your Child to Summer Camp

Sending your child to overnight summer camp for the first time is a classic milestone. You both may have your worries but preparing ahead of time will help to ease your mind. Follow these tips before dropping them off for a week of summer fun.

Empower Them to be Independent

Sending your child to camp can go one of two ways. They’ll either be on the edge of their seat and ready to take off, or second guessing their decision to be away from home. No matter the case, it’s important to celebrate their independence and to let them know that they’ll be safe. Remind them of how busy they’ll be having fun and making new friends. You can always come and rescue them in case of emergency, but try your best not to focus on the fact that they can call you if they’re not having a good time. Chances are, your child will warm up to camp much more quickly than he or she thinks.

Pack Lightly

More often than not, there’s not a whole lot of space within your child’s camp accommodations. Plus, no one wants to be the one who brings an excess amount of stuff. Stick to the necessities and your child will thank you later. What to pack:

  • Shorts
  • Jeans
  • Comfy pants
  • Short sleeves
  • Long sleeve shirt
  • Pajamas
  • Light Jacket
  • Swimsuit
  • Sneakers
  • Extra underwear
  • Flip-flops
  • Umbrella
  • Toiletries
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Flashlight
  • Reusable water bottle
  • A bag for dirty clothes

Take Advantage of Having Time for Yourself

While the kids are away having fun, so should you! Use this time to plan a date night or a weekend getaway you wouldn’t otherwise have time for. Catch up with friends. Consider booking time for your favorite form of self-care. Once it’s time to pick your child up from camp, you’ll feel refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to have them back at home.
