Transitioning from Middle School to High School

The transition from middle school to high school can seem difficult or overwhelming. You will be navigating a new school, making new friends, meeting new teachers and taking on new courses. Emotions can range from excitement to fear—it’s natural to have mixed feelings about starting high school.

Here are some helpful tips for making your transition to high school a little easier:

  • Get to know your high school campus before the school year begins.
  • Read materials from your high school including school newsletters and handbooks.
  • Stay organized with a planner and keep a calendar that schedules time for homework and extracurricular activities.
  • Get involved in student activities such as government, sports, clubs, and community organizations.
  • Check out bulletin boards on campus to see what’s going on in and around school.
  • Make a four-year high school plan for yourself with the assistance of a parent or your school counselor.

Although high school brings about big changes, it’s nothing you can’t handle. If you start to feel overwhelmed, talk to a parent, your pediatrician or school counselor. They can answer any questions you may have and help to provide guidance.
